ARTHUR J. BURKS “Demise of the Flute.” Dorus Noel #1. Quick story. First revealed in All Detective Journal, April 1933. Collected in Grottos of Chinatown (Off Path Publications, softcover, 2009).
That is the primary story that prolific pulp author wrote about tremendous sleuth Doris Noel. In a approach it’s too dangerous that he didn’t write any of Noel’s earlier adventures that befell in China combating the evil methods of Chu Chul, clearly a Fu Manchu wanna-be often known as The Cricket, as a result of they do sound attention-grabbing. What now we have right here in “Demise of the Flute” is a continuation of their mutual wrestle in opposition to one another, ending, maybe, within the loss of life of one of many combatants, and it isn’t Dorus Noel.
It might or will not be Chu Chul’s both, as a result of the latter exhibits up in “The White Wasp,” Noel’s subsequent journey. I’ve not learn that subsequent story but, although, so it might solely be an imposter that Noel has to face down.
However not wishing to get forward of ourselves, “Demise of the Flute” begins with Noel beneath the agency perception that he noticed Chu Chul die. He’s again in New York Metropolis now, and in Chinatown specifically, working for a unidentified benefactor with the cost to wipe out crime and corruption in that part of the large metropolis.
However in fact Chu Chul will not be lifeless, and earlier than Noel can get to work on his actual mission, he should take care of that individual evil genius and finish his dream of world domination as soon as and for all.
That is no simple activity, in fact, however after some setbacks, together with the agonizing loss of life of his devoted servant by the hands of Noel’s archenemy, the latter does certainly prevail, in good pulpy vogue.
