Stimulus packages not for loan defaulters: FBCCI president

The Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) will not help any loan defaulters in availing funds from the government’s stimulus packages, the president of the apex trade body has said.

FBCCI President Sheikh Fazle Fahim said this while addressing a group of businessmen in a virtual meeting organised by Narsingdi Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Monday, and added that the stimulus packages were for the “real traders”, according to a statement of FBCCI issued today.

“Let the real traders of the country avail this incentive package. For this, the members of all the district chambers of commerce will cooperate with the bankers,” he added.

The FBCCI has been coordinating the disbursement of stimulus funds after the government announced stimulus packages worth more than Tk 1 lakh crore, with a view to disburse the funds among businesses to help them survive the economic fallout of the Covid-19 pandemic.

In this regard, the apex trade body has taken various steps to implement the government’s incentive package to stand by small, medium and new entrepreneurs who have suffered while keeping the country’s wheel of economy running amid the global epidemic.

“We are cooperating with small, medium, and new entrepreneurs of the country, who have no connection with the banks, to avail this incentive. We want to connect the unrecognised traders of the country,” Fazle Fahim said in the statement of the FBCCI.

“This will also strengthen the economic aspect of the nation. However, we never want the banks to have any problem in implementing this incentive since the banking sector is also a big stakeholder. Besides, we are always working to ensure that traders who are defaulters do not get any kind of loan facility,” the FBCCI chief also said.
