Kuwait govt official suspended for ‘taking bribe’ from MP Shahid

Kuwait’s interior ministry official Major General Mazen Al-Jarrah has been suspended on suspicion that he accepted bribes and was involved in financial transactions linked to the human trafficking and money laundering case against Bangladeshi MP Shahid Islam.

Kuwait’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anas Al-Saleh issued a decree suspending Al-Jarrah, assistant undersecretary of its interior ministry, reports Kuwait Times yesterday.

It says during the investigations into the case, it came to light that there is the possibility he accepted bribes and was involved in financial transactions.

Kuwait’s Public Prosecution requested the National Assembly to lift immunity to three members of parliament for the sake of investigation. It named several other officials for their link to the crimes. This is the first time, any official has been suspended.

Bangladeshi lawmaker Mohammad Shahid Islam from Laxmipur-2 constituency was arrested on June 6 on charges of human trafficking, money laundering, bribing and visa trading.

The managing director and CEO of Marafie Kuwaitia Group, who has been sent to the jail after days of interrogation, admitted bribing millions of dollars for getting job contracts from Kuwait government agencies and recruiting foreign workers.

He hired some 20,000 Bangladeshi workers but is accused of charging Tk 700,000 to Tk 900,000, paying less than the contracted amounts and even leaving them jobless.

Bangladesh’s Anti-Corruption Commission opened investigation against him allegedly for laundering Tk 1,400 crore. The commission also imposed travel ban on Shahid’s wife Selina Islam, an MP from reserved seat, daughter Wafa Islam and sister-in law Jasmin Akhter.
