Confirming the matter, Superintendent Kishor Kumar Nag of the jail said they implemented the stand release order, issued by the deputy inspector general (prisons), this afternoon immediately after receiving it.
The order was issued based on an intelligence report on the guards’ involvement in drugs supply.
There was widespread criticism of two jail guards’ alleged involvement in drugs supply about two months ago, Kishor Kumar told The Daily Star.
Later, an investigation by an intelligence agency found 14 jail guards, including the two, involved in supply of narcotics, he added.
According to jail sources, guards Mehedi Hasan and Sanowar Hossain formed a drug supply ring with the help of some drug smugglers from outside the jail. The two jail guards added 12 others to the ring to supply narcotics to a section of inmates. They had been supplying phensedyl, cannabis and yaba tablets to drug addicts inside the jail for more than a year.
